How a double breasted suit differs

The overlapping front and the second column of buttons do two things. They broaden the chest and square the silhouette, which flatters narrower frames and gives a stronger line in photographs. And they raise the formality of the same cloth by a step, which is why a double breasted navy suit works at an evening wedding where a single breasted one would read as office wear. Peak lapels are near-universal on the cut and are part of why it reads sharper.

Button configuration and how to wear it

Most modern double breasted jackets are six-on-two or six-on-one — six buttons showing, two or one that actually fasten. Fasten the working button and leave the rest. Unlike a single breasted jacket, a double breasted one is worn buttoned while standing and, ideally, kept buttoned; the front hangs open and loses its line otherwise. Because the cut already carries structure, a waistcoat is unnecessary — a two piece double breasted is a complete outfit in a way a two piece single breasted is not.

Where it belongs

Evening weddings, formal receptions, galas and any event where the photographs matter. In pinstripe it leans vintage and pairs naturally with 1920s styling. In plain navy or charcoal it is simply a sharper business suit.
