It gives the front some definition without any pattern or logo doing the work, and it means the jacket reads as deliberate rather than plain. Nobody has failed to notice it. Utility styling usually means enormous pockets and a lot of stitching. This has the flap pockets and the shape and stops there, so it looks like a jacket rather than a uniform. It is the restraint that makes the whole thing work rather than any single detail on it, and that is a harder thing to design than a pile of pockets.
Phone shows through the front

Really pleased with the jacket overall. The interior pocket is on the same side as the button placket, so a phone in it sits under the buttons and pushes the front out visibly. I use an outer pocket now instead, which works perfectly well, but it does make the inside one fairly pointless as a result.
Buttons rather than a zip

It sits flatter under a coat, it does not snag a jumper, and you can leave the top one open without the whole thing gaping. The buttons themselves are heavy and properly shanked, which suprised me at this sort of money for a wool jacket.

I looked at two jackets at nearly double this and could not see where the extra money would go. The cloth has weight, the seams are bound and the buttons are heavy. If there is a difference between this and the dearer ones I have not found it.

Knit goes underneath

Regular fit with genuine room, so a thick knit goes underneath and the buttons still close comfortably with nothing straining across the chest. That was the specific thing my last jacket could not manage at all, and it is the whole reason I ended up replacing it with this one. The sleeves are cut wide enough that a knit sleeve does not bunch at the elbow.
